1st & 2nd Digits - Chapter

Represents the broad category chapter of the product (e.g., Chapter 84 lists Machinery and Computers).

3rd & 4th Digits - Heading

Identifies the specific heading characteristics or product groups within that chapter.

5th & 6th Digits - Sub-heading

The internationally standardized product sub-heading code, utilized globally in foreign trade.

7th & 8th Digits - Tariff Item

Indian Customs Tariff items. Extremely specific digits designed to align with domestic excise and tax rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between HSN and SAC codes?

HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) is an international 6-to-8 digit classification system used for physical goods. SAC (Services Accounting Code) is a specific classification system designed by India's CBIC to identify and tax services (always starting with 99).

Are HSN codes mandatory on GST invoices?

Yes, under Indian GST rules:
• Businesses with turnover up to ₹5 Crores must use 4-digit HSN codes for B2B invoices.
• Businesses with turnover above ₹5 Crores must list 6-digit HSN codes on all invoices.

How is GST split on local and interstate transactions?

For sales within the same state (Intrastate), GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For sales to another state (Interstate), 100% of the tax slab is collected as IGST (Integrated GST).
