How businesses structure double discounts and how it affects profit calculations.
In sequential mode, the secondary discount is calculated on the already reduced price rather than the original price.
For example, with a 20% + 10% off on a ₹1,000 product:
• First discount (20%) reduces price to ₹800.
• Second discount (10%) is calculated on ₹800, reducing it by ₹80.
• Final Sale Price = ₹720 (Effective discount is 28%, not 30%).
In additive mode, the discount percentages are added together and applied to the original price in a single step.
For example, with a 20% + 10% off on a ₹1,000 product:
• Combined discount = 20% + 10% = 30%.
• Savings = 30% of ₹1,000 = ₹300.
• Final Sale Price = ₹700 (Effective discount is exactly 30%).
When selling items with GST Exclusive pricing, the discount is applied to the base price first. The GST tax (e.g. 18%) is then computed and added to that discounted amount. This reduces the total tax paid by the customer, yielding additional savings.
Sequential discounts appear larger (e.g., "50% + 20% Off" sounds like 70% Off) but mathematically cost the retailer less (effective discount is 60%). This maximizes consumer interest while protecting business profit margins.
